Many people celebrate the first day of a new year on Jan. 1, but for the billions of people around the world that celebrate the Lunar New Year, also called the Chinese New Year, the year 2024 鈥 otherwise known as The Year of the Dragon 鈥 won鈥檛 start until Feb. 10.
The Lunar New Year lasts for 15 days, and includes fireworks, music and dance performances, Asian food, and more. Here鈥檚 a sampling of celebrations around southeast Michigan.
Winter at Valade: Lunar New Year

The International Center at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor is hosting a grab-and-go event that features snacks from Lucky Kitchen, a Chinese restaurant in Ann Arbor. Lunar New Year Concert with Xiao Dong
Xiao Dong Wei was accepted into the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing at 11 years old. A decade later, she earned her degree and became a Master of the Erhu, the two-string Chinese violin.
