The Stars of Detroit City Football Club Suit Up

Slim-fitting suits, brand-name athletic wear, and trendy hairstyles dominate off-the-field style

Every sport has its official 鈥 or unofficial 鈥 dress code. In basketball, it鈥檚 fresh sneakers and designer eyewear. In hockey, it鈥檚 beards and extra-long 鈥渇low.鈥 And in soccer, where multimillion-dollar deals between European fashion labels and superstars like David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo are the norm, it鈥檚 slim-fitting suits, brand-name athletic wear, and trendy hairstyles. For proof, look no further than the stars of Detroit鈥檚 favorite soccer team, Detroit City Football Club.

For the uninitiated, Detroit City F.C., nicknamed Le Rouge, has been 鈥渓ifting Detroit in soccer鈥 since 2012. Over the past few years, the popularity of the semi-professional, National Premier Soccer League team has soared, prompting, in part, last year鈥檚 move from the 2,500-capacity Cass Tech Stadium in Midtown to the 7,000-capacity Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck.

As expected, Le Rouge鈥檚 loyal fan base followed the team across town, bringing their flags, smoke bombs, and lively chants with them. And although that part of soccer culture 鈥 the rowdy, dedicated fandom 鈥 has translated here in Detroit, it hasn鈥檛 always been that way.

鈥淲hen I was 7, 8 years old in the early 2000s, soccer was nothing in the United States at all,鈥 says Tyler Moorman, a second-year forward with DCFC. 鈥淢ajor League Soccer was terrible and nobody liked it, and now it鈥檚 huge and it鈥檚 getting even bigger.鈥

As the world鈥檚 favorite sport has grown here in the U.S., so too has its influence on the fashion world, from men鈥檚 athletic apparel to casual street wear.

鈥淚 think at the start of it, the whole fashion sense wasn鈥檛 there at all,鈥 Moorman says. 鈥淏ut now before games you see guys dressing the same way as the European teams do, and I think that鈥檚 come with people taking it more seriously. 鈥 You鈥檝e got media involved, you鈥檝e got social media, you鈥檝e got fans. Guys actually care about their appearance.鈥

To be sure, every sport has its share of athletes who are known for their pre- and post-game garb such as basketball鈥檚 Russell Westbrook, football鈥檚 J.J. Watt, and hockey鈥檚 Henrik Lundqvist. But among certain crowds, the fashion-forward soccer player has garnered a certain reputation.

鈥淪occer players get a bad rap,鈥 says DCFC midfielder Spiro Pliakos. 鈥淟ike 鈥極h, these guys are so soft because they鈥檙e doing their hair.鈥 You鈥檒l get a bunch of crap for it, but they鈥檙e looking good. They鈥檙e on the billboards鈥 It鈥檚 a 鈥榣ook good, feel good鈥 type of thing.鈥

Aside from a suave hairstyle, looking good on game day for DCFC members typically consists of an official team polo and khaki shorts or pants, but that doesn鈥檛 mean members of Le Rouge aren鈥檛 free to get creative.

鈥淚f I can wear something to stand out, I will,鈥 says George Chomakov, a fourth-year DCFC midfielder. 鈥淚f I feel like I can do it, I鈥檒l try it out. That鈥檚 the way I鈥檝e looked at style for a while.鈥

But even in Europe, where fashion looms large, soccer 鈥 er, football 鈥 looms larger. As DCFC captain and English native Dave Edwardson puts it, come game day, the focus is all about what happens on the field.

鈥淔ashion鈥檚 huge now,鈥 Edwardson says. 鈥淚 wouldn鈥檛 say it鈥檚 a part of the game, but I would say it definitely has something to do with the game.鈥

At the end of any match, what always looks best is a 鈥淲,鈥 but for DCFC, whose official motto is 鈥淧assion for Our City, Passion for Our Game,鈥 every game is also about building community and meeting the enthusiasm of the fans.

鈥淚t鈥檚 amazing what the fans do for us,鈥 Chomakov says. 鈥淭o get 7,000 people at a game, it鈥檚 unbelievable. It鈥檚 one big family. That鈥檚 how I look at it. Whether it鈥檚 the owners or the coach, the players, the fans, we鈥檙e all in it together. It feels like a big family.鈥

Of course, it never hurts to look good in the process.
