Looking to spruce up your small cottage getaway? Or hoping to revitalize a tiny room in your home? Here鈥檚 are some small space design tips from local designers to help make your interior stand out.

Think multipurpose

鈥淎 cutting board can be a serving tray,鈥 says interior designer Dawn Jacobs, of Holly-based Artichoke Interiors. 鈥淎nd a storage trunk can be a coffee table.鈥 Adds interior designer Denise Seifferlein, of D鈥橝vignon Interiors in Clarkston: 鈥淔urniture that鈥檚 easily movable can do double duty, like ottomans or kitchen seating.鈥

Consider creative storage systems

鈥淔or example, beds can have drawers under them,鈥 Jacobs says. Tiffany Edison of Birch Design Associates adds: 鈥淎 custom banquette/eating area was constructed in a corner of our family room and provides storage under the seating surfaces.鈥

Add sleeping space

Main living areas can accommodate overnight guests, especially if there鈥檚 a sofa that pulls out to become a bed, Edison notes.

Skip heavy drapery

鈥淐onsider window shades for privacy, and keep those colors light,鈥 Seifferlein says.

Go with white

Edison used Sherwin-Williams鈥 Snowbound paint in a satin finish on all the first-floor walls and used a semigloss finish on her wood ceilings. The white theme was continued throughout the galley kitchen, with floor-to-ceiling subway tile in the same hue.

Retain character

Edison鈥檚 original enamel sink unit maintains the character of the space. It was reglazed to match the newly installed kitchen cabinetry, lending a seamless aesthetic.

Up your entertaining game

鈥淲e built a deck on for extra seating for entertaining,鈥 Edison says.听 听
