Shinola Detroit Highlights Local Sustainability with Dos Jefes Garments Tote Bag Collaboration

鈥淒esigned, cut, and sewn in Detroit:鈥 A tagline that would make any fashion-loving Michigander鈥檚 ears perk.听 Add in a guarantee of sustainability, and you鈥檝e found the perfect marriage of the local style and eco-friendly design that is 鈥檚 newest collaboration with .

The limited-edition release features 30 tote bags made from apparel, accessory, and home decor fromShinola鈥檚 stock of surplus textiles. Each bag is one-of-a-kind, designed and sewn by Midtown-based upcycling artisan Dos Jefes Garments.

Pieced together with leftover scraps of denim, leather, cotton canvas, heavy-duty nylon threads, and lining fabric 鈥 Shinola鈥檚 鈥渓iability materials鈥 鈥 the totes鈥 designs range from textured neutrals to colorful patterns and patchwork, showcasing the variety of upcycled textiles while adding a touch of Dos Jefes鈥 signature style.

Founded as a Detroit watch manufacturer in 2011, Shinola is no stranger to collaborations. In recent years, the brand partnered with bath company Waterworks on purchasable bathroom fittings for their 2019 hotel venture, and with furniture corporation Crate and Barrel on an expansive Summer 2021 home d茅cor collection.

Shinola鈥檚 partnership with Dos Jefes, however, marks a shift in their collaboration style, supporting two increasingly advocated for concepts in retail: small businesses and sustainability.

As for Dos Jefes, this project is just the latest upcycle for the brand, which has given new life to over two tons of fabric in the past five years. Often sourcing textiles from thrift stores, owners PJ Hebert and Sam Pohlen specialize in brand-unique designs that transform once-abandoned garments and fabric scraps into locally-made, high-fashion hoodies, crewnecks, pants, and shorts.

The collaboration premieres at Shinola Canfield in Detroit on August 10 from 5-8 p.m. and becomes available for purchase 鈥 along with customizable Dos Jefes hoodies and patches 鈥 for a limited time after in select stores.
