Built To The Hilt: Buildings 鈥 their design, renovation, and construction 鈥 symbolize optimism.

As evidence: The world鈥檚 most famous skyscraper, The Empire State, was built during The Great Depression.

So it was on a positive note that the American Institute of Architects Detroit announced its annual Excellence in Architecture awards. Winners were cited for a range of work, from contemporary corporate headquarters to historic renovation.

Projects recognized at the Lawrence Technological University event included:

  • Lear Corp. world headquarters, Southfield, by Albert Kahn Associates of Detroit.
  • The Surnow Co. building in the former downtown Birmingham Post Office, a 1939 structure renovated to become a 20,000-square-foot, Class A multi-tenant office building designed by Biddison Architecture + Design in Birmingham.
  • Kettering University鈥檚 Innovation Center, Flint, by SHW Group in Berkley.
  • The United Way of Southeastern Michigan Headquarters by the SmithGroup, Detroit.
  • Southfield-based Rossetti received a 25-year award for the Federal Mogul Headquarters addition in Southfield.

Individuals also were honored:

  • AIA Gold Medal: Roger Margerum, Roger Margerum Architects Inc., Detroit.

  • 听Charles Blessing Award: Mayor Dave Bing.
