Influenced by her parents鈥 stylish flair 鈥 her father鈥檚 love for Cadillacs and custom jewelry, her mother鈥檚 impeccable grooming 鈥 Tiff Massey, who at age 42 is the youngest artist to be featured in a Detroit Institute of Arts solo exhibition, is sculpting a new narrative of Black identity and culture through her larger-than-life art.

is the trained metalsmith and sculptor鈥檚 vibrant tribute to her roots growing up in the fashion district and the community that nurtured her artistic spirit.

At the exhibition, which the DIA calls her 鈥渕ost ambitious museum installation to date,鈥 you will find new sculptures commissioned by the museum, including 鈥淲hatupdoe,鈥 a 15,000-pound necklace made from steel architectural beams, and 鈥淏aby Bling,鈥 made of metal beads, woven rope, and brass, an homage to the hair ties and barrettes of a girl鈥檚 childhood.

鈥淭he exhibition is an homage to Blackness,鈥 Massey explains. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about love, labor, and being nurtured. It鈥檚 about the everyday rituals of adornment, like the hair ties and the care from your mom or grandmother.鈥

Why Massey now? Exhibition curator Katie Pfohl explains: 鈥淭iff Massey is an internationally recognized artist but has never had a major museum exhibition in her hometown of Detroit.鈥 The exhibition, which features works by several other artists from the museum鈥檚 collection, 鈥渞eflects the qualities that inspired us to work with Tiff: her deep commitment to the city of Detroit and her innovative art practice merging metalsmithing, installation art, and community work.鈥

Massey鈥檚 work draws heavily from the aesthetics of 1980s hip-hop culture, with its oversize accessories and bold statements. 鈥淚 was always amazed by the scales of these works,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 take those characteristics from hip-hop and make these larger necklaces in my fashion.鈥

Massey鈥檚 education at Cranbrook Academy of Art 鈥 where she was the first Black woman to earn an MFA in metalsmithing 鈥 expanded her artistic repertoire, allowing her to experiment with different materials and scales. 鈥淚 love metal, but I also started working with fiber and thinking about sculpture,鈥 she explains. 鈥淚 began considering how to adorn more than one person at a time.鈥

Navigating the art world as a trailblazer, Massey has faced her share of obstacles. As one of the few Black women with a Master of Fine Arts in metalsmithing, she鈥檚 confronted racism and doubts about her skills head-on. Instead of backing down, Massey thrives on the challenge.

鈥淚 double down,鈥 she says. 鈥淥nce I realized that I鈥檓 bothering people just because I鈥檓 skilled and talented, it鈥檚 like, let鈥檚 go. I鈥檓 just gonna wear you out.鈥

Art, for Massey, is a dynamic platform for addressing social issues, particularly those affecting things, historical things, and Detroit quite often,鈥 she says. 鈥淲e are ambassadors for our city, whether we want to be or not.鈥

Looking ahead, Massey is excited about several upcoming projects. She鈥檚 organizing WhatUpDoe Fest in September, a community-focused festival.

鈥淲hatUpDoe Fest will celebrate the culture and creativity of Detroit,鈥 Massey says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about bringing people together and highlighting the amazing talent we have in this city.鈥

Additionally, she is working on a major commission for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library in Charlotte, North Carolina. 鈥淚鈥檒l be the only artist commissioned to make a new piece for their uptown library, exhibited alongside Romare Bearden,鈥 she shares. This project involves creating a 136-panel wooden quilt that will be displayed at the library.

The commission is a significant undertaking, reflecting Massey鈥檚 dedication to her craft and her ability to work on a grand scale.

鈥淭hese panels will be a fusion of wood and mixed media, each telling a part of a larger story,鈥 she explains. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about creating something that resonates with the community and honors the space it鈥檚 in.

鈥淚 want my art to reflect the beauty and complexity of Black life,鈥 she says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about more than just aesthetics 鈥 it鈥檚 about storytelling and representation.鈥

Her pieces, whether they are large-scale installations or intricate metalwork, are a testament to her skill and vision. Massey鈥檚 ability to cross genres and mediums speaks to her versatility as an artist.

鈥淚鈥檓 interdisciplinary,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 want people to come and see what I鈥檓 talking about each time. It鈥檚 not just about one style or one message.鈥

Despite the challenges she has faced, Massey鈥檚 passion for her work and her community remains unwavering.

鈥淎rt is a powerful vehicle for change,鈥 she says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about starting conversations and making people think. I want my work to inspire and provoke, to make people see the world differently.鈥

With her upcoming projects and ongoing commitment to community development, Tiff Massey is not slowing down. Her work continues to push boundaries and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Detroit.

鈥淚鈥檓 just getting started,鈥 she says. 鈥淭here鈥檚 so much more to come.鈥
