Anna Burch opens her second album, If You鈥檙e Dreaming, with a somnambulant song, 鈥淐an鈥檛 Sleep,鈥 followed by the jangly 鈥淧arty鈥檚 Over,鈥 in which she repeats the chorus, 鈥淚鈥檓 so tired,鈥 over and over.

Sleeplessness and anxiety color a chunk of the album, partly as a result of Burch鈥檚 extensive touring behind 2018鈥檚 fuzzy, alt-rock-influenced Quit the Curse, but mainly because, on New Year鈥檚 Eve in 2017, Burch and her boyfriend were robbed at gunpoint in front of their house in southwest Detroit.

鈥淟ife was a bit chaotic,鈥 says Burch, who studied English at Michigan State University and used to play in the Detroit folk-rock band Frontier Ruckus. 鈥淚 feel like there鈥檚 a bit of paranoia and anxiety that comes through some of the writing. I definitely was not sleeping very well.鈥

While recording with co-producer Sam Evian and Detroit-based drummer Matthew Rickle, the 32-year-old realized that another song 鈥 the hazy 鈥淎sk Me To鈥 鈥 was indirectly about the robbery and the anxiety she felt afterward. 鈥淚t won鈥檛 be long before it hits,鈥 she sings. 鈥淟ike too much wine on empty stomachs.鈥

鈥淚 wasn鈥檛 really sure what exactly it was about,鈥 says Burch, who will play a record release show at Detroit鈥檚 UFO Factory on Aug. 1. 鈥淲hile we were arranging it for recording, it opened up my brain to click with what it was about, and I realized it was referring to the robbery. It was interesting to make the connection much later.鈥

After bouncing around a number of houses with friends while she was on and off the road, Burch and her boyfriend found an apartment they loved in Hamtramck about a year and a half ago. If You鈥檙e Dreaming is split almost neatly into two halves, with the instrumental 鈥淜eep It Warm鈥 serving as a dividing line. The songs from the first half were written before Burch went on tour in 2018; most of the second half came last winter, after she鈥檇 settled into her new home.

By the time you get to the poppy 鈥淣ot So Bad,鈥 she鈥檚 changed her tune from sleepless nights to somewhat upbeat love songs laced with dry humor. 鈥淲hat is this instinct to hate on everything,鈥 Burch sings over shimmering guitars. 鈥淪eems it鈥檚 in me badly I鈥檓 afraid/ I鈥檓 so much better when you鈥檙e around.鈥

鈥淚 wrote that song super last-minute,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 kind of knew that there was something missing from the record. Because my environment was stabilizing, I was starting to be able to get out of survival mode and really take into account the good things I have in my life.鈥
